We originally developed Surf-By-Tel in Microsoft ASP for a customer as a proof-of-concept solution 3 years ago to prove that the telephone could be used for surfing the web with voice commands. Much has changed in 3 years with respect to speech technologies, web development platforms, and social computing opportunities.
As we strive to maintain our position in bleeding-edge mobile innovation, it became clear to us that Surf-By-Tel has grown past a proof-of-concept solution and potentially could become a viable working platform for mobile professionals and visually impaired citizens. With the buzz of Ruby on Rails and Web 2.0, we decided to explore a re-write of Surf-By-Tel to make it faster and more streamlined to take advantage of new technology features such as RSS, MP3 audio, and social networking.
The new Surf-By-Tel platform has been entirely re-written in Ruby on Rails and is currently in beta and being hosted by Plum Voice and Heroku. It can now be deployed on Linux, Microsoft, and even Mac operating systems or it can be delivered as a Software-as-a-Service model.
We are very excited about the future of Surf-By-Tel. Send us an email at sales [at] getvocal.com for more information.
